SBE Picnic 2014

Arthur Willetts, Chairman –

The 9th annual SBE Chapter 16 Summer Fun Picnic turned out to be a fine and dandy one as 42 Members and guests enjoyed everyone’s company and the assorted weather conditions throughout the afternoon.  As the sun broke through the clouds, the winds kept things cooled off resulting in the perfect combination for comfort.  Young and old alike enjoyed the recreational disc golfing and bean bag tossing while others took the opportunity to catch up with those they had not seen for some time.

Earlier in the day, a large group of eager engineers participated in the always fascinating Island Transmitter Crawl.  Without a doubt, the interest for this tour never fades as many folks look forward to the opportunity to see the inside of some of these historical sites.

Back at the spacious KOMO AM (Sinclair Broadcast Group) picnic area, the finishing touches were put on the layout of a delicious picnic spread while master grill chef Terry Spring expertly flipped the burgers and maneuvered the hotdogs using an ingenious method of wiener management that is sure to be the new style of handling those slippery tube steaks in the future.

After everyone had their fill of the picnic delights, Chairman Willetts began a Chapter meeting that featured some new highlights that are sure to become traditional events.

The new Induction Ceremony commenced as the exiting Chapter Board was given an opportunity to express how they felt about their service and talk about accomplishments they made, followed by the passing of the torch to each respective seat’s incoming officer.

Secondly in the new Awards Ceremony, the Chairman announced the Chapter’s choice for the Chapter Engineer of the Year Award and presented a plaque to Jim Dalke while reading a list of Jim’s impressive  accomplishments and Chapter service.
Third up, the Chairman presented newly certified Members Dale Comer, Matthew Buck, and Stephanie Zimmerman with their earned certification pins while thanking them for their commitment of continuing their broadcast education and inspiring other Members to do the same.

Another highlight of the picnic was the announcement of the presence of honored guest Barry Mishkind, Founder and editor of The Broadcaster’s Desktop Resource.  If you didn’t know by now, is a most valuable tool to keep up to date with all the many facets of broadcast engineering.

Wrapping up the meeting and picnic, Chapter 16 supporter and sponsor Shannon Nichols of Broadcast Supply Worldwide gave away studio-preferred Sennheiser headsets and a desirable grand gift of a Kuering coffee maker.

Special thanks goes to Garret Wood and GatesAir for the lip-smacking chocolate cake dessert.

Additional thanks is expressed to faithful Chapter supporters Hatfield and Dawson Consulting Engineers for always providing the thirst quenching social lubrication at our events.

All in all, everyone had a wonderful time while showing copious amounts of Chapter pride.  Make plans now to attend next year!
