Picnic Time!

June 3, 2017

The Annual SBE Chapter 16 Picnic will be held Saturday, July 29th at the historic KIRO-AM transmitter facility on Vashon Island!  Festivities begin at noon with free food, comradery and fun for chapter members, family & friends.

Program Chairman, Arthur Willets, is preparing a delightful picnic menu that will include Smokey pulled pork sandwiches, sirloin hamburgers (optional cheese), beef hotdogs, veggie burgers, homemade German potato salad, homemade slaw salad, chips, pretzels, snacks, apple crisp dessert. soda, and water.

This year, Jim Hatfield of Hatfield and Dawson Engineers will be sharing some of the history of the KIRO-AM transmitter which went on the air in 1941.  The transmitter was the first 50 kW transmitter west of the Mississippi.  The ATU’s for the installation were a “high fidelity” design by Frank McIntosh of McIntosh amplifier fame.

The program this year will also include the introduction of the new chapter board members, chapter award winners, and announcement of Arne Skoog Scholarship winners.

There may also be a Vashon Island transmitter tour after the main picnic activities.  Vashon Island is home to six 50kW AM transmitters: KOMO, KIRO, KGNW, KJR, KTTH, KFNQ, as well as the historic KVI.

This year’s picnic is sponsored by our good friends at BSW with liquid refreshments provided by the folks at Hatfield and Dawson Engineers.

Please RSVP ASAP for planning purposes.  Include your name and how many guests, and if you would like to take the transmitter tour.  picnic@sbe16.org
