Robinson named Chapter Educator of the Year

Seattle SBE Chapter 16 member, Roland Robinson, CBTE, CBT, CTO, has named as the Chapter Educator of the Year.  Roland will be recognized for the award at the Annual Chapter 16 Picnic, July 13.

Roland is an Instructor of classes in Broadcasting and Video Production at Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Washington.  Roland has taught at Bates for more than ten years implementing an SBE approved certification curriculum in his broadcast classes.

Roland also serves on the Washington State Emergency Communications Committee (SECC) and provides a valued service to Washington State broadcasters by creating and maintaining the complex Required Monthly Test (RMT) schedule.

Roland’s selection as Chapter Educator of the year comes with his nomination for the SBE National James C. Wulliman Educator of the Year.

Bates Campus Dean for Advanced Technology, Josh Clearman had the following words of recommendation for Roland:

Roland is an outstanding faculty member who makes a positive difference in the lives of his students and the community.

Roland works long hours serving the college.  As one of his graduating students, Preston writes, “he is always willing to help students before school or late after. He has made considerable sacrifice for students, me included”.

Additionally, Roland ensures that our college meets the Society of Broadcast Engineers accreditation and certifications.  We are moving towards video streaming and adapting to the next century.  Roland and his team live streamed graduation as a classroom activity.

Roland is also an active member of the college recruitment team, and he prepared and delivered a hands-on lesson to 80 local students.  These students are local high school students who are interested in STEM.  He also serves on several college committees that advance the college’s mission and vision.   Fellow instructor Ken Witkoe says, “Roland is one of the most dedicated teachers I have ever met.  His commitment to student learning – especially in broadcast technology – is second to none.”
