It is SBE Picnic Time on Vashon! RSVP

The big annual SBE Chapter 16 Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 13th, at Vashon Island’s historic KIRO-AM transmitter facility! Festivities begin at noon with free food, comradery, and fun for chapter members, family, and friends.

Prepare your taste buds for a culinary adventure! Our menu this year is a feast for all tastes, featuring a variety of options to cater to everyone’s preferences. We’ve got you covered from our traditional hamburgers and cheeseburgers to hotdogs and veggie burgers. And to beat the summer heat, we’ll have refreshing salads and a generous supply of watermelons.

Jim Hatfield of Hatfield and Dawson Engineers will share some of the history of the KIRO-AM transmitter, which went on the air in 1941. The transmitter was the first 50 kW transmitter west of the Mississippi. The ATUs for the installation were a “high fidelity” design by Frank McIntosh of McIntosh Amplifier fame.

This year’s program includes chapter award winners as well as new members.

If there are enough requests via the RSVP, there may also be a Vashon Island transmitter tour after the main picnic activities.  Vashon Island has six 50kW AM transmitters: KOMO, KIRO, KGNW, KJR, KTTH, KFNQ, and the historic KVI.

This year’s picnic is sponsored by our good friends at BSW and Nautel, and liquid refreshments will be provided by Hatfield and Dawson Engineers.

We kindly request you to RSVP at your earliest convenience. This will assist us in our planning. Please include your name, the number of guests, and whether you would like to join the transmitter tour:

Directions to the picnic site and ferry schedules are posted on the chapter “Meetings” tab above.
